Optimus | Pet Portraits | Dighton, MA

I can't believe I didn't blog about this sooner, but I've started offering Pet Portraits!  After loosing my dear cat in July of 2015 to cancer, I realized I was so thankful I had taken some portraits of her with my big camera.  I had tons of cell phone snaps, but the ones I took of my camera were obviously better quality, and allowed me to print a large canvas of her.  I wanted to offer the pet portraits, because I know so many of my friends and clients have pets they adore.  Pets sadly leave us way too soon, no matter how old they live until.  They take up huge places in our hearts, and I want to help capture some beautiful memories for you to enjoy for years to come.

Optimus, the most adorable dog, was one of my first clients!  His mom and dad are wedding clients of mine! I photographed their wedding in May of 2016.  I had met Optimus at both Amanda and Charlie's engagement session and wedding. He's a little peanut, full of energy, but so sweet.  When I first thought of this idea, I reached out to Amanda first, because I knew some of Optimus' story.  I asked Amanda to write up something about her sweet boy, so you could get to know him a bit:

"The story of Optimus is one of a lot of love from all corners of his life. His time on this Earth started out pretty rough; he was born on February 7th, 2011 during the biggest blizzard of the year. He was born into a litter of twelve, him being the runt and smallest of the bunch.

When his Momma (Amanda) first took him into her care, he was a month old and weighed 1.5 pounds from being neglected from his dog mother, leaving him malnourished and all skin and bones. She took him to the vet to make sure that he would be okay to take him, and the vet told her that she should pick another puppy because he surely wasn't going to make it. And if he did, he would have neurological issues that would lead to him having to be put down. But that didn't sway her! She was already attached and he was the pup that she wanted to bring home.

After a couple of weeks of going to work with Amanda each day and being fed vitamins and nutrients via dropper, little Optimus began to return to looking like a normal pup. That didn't stop her family from calling him the "Dobby" of puppies, lol! The good part about his rough start is that he has forever remained the size of a six month old pup; he's only 37 pounds and about a foot and a half tall! The mini baby.

He's been surrounded by a lot of love from everyone he's ever met, and is a unique staple to his family. He's spoiled rotten, and he's got such a fun personality. Sometimes it's hard to think of him as just a dog! He's very smart and knows what he wants, when he wants it.

Things have always been good for him, but in 2016 he had a bit of a cancer scare. In January he began having a problem with ear infections, which soon led to a large polyp growing in his right ear. In April he had the polyp removed, only to find out that there were multiple polyps growing in his ear canal and that the vet could not only get all of them, but couldn't get out all of the main polyp that they were removing in the first place.

Because of how many were growing in his ear, the vet had a feeling that it was cancer that was causing the problems in his ear. Thankfully, that wasn't the case. But the problems didn't stop there. By June, the polyps had grown back ten fold; you couldn't even see into his ear because of how large and how many that had grown.

After getting opinions from six different vets and a lot of deliberation, Optimus' Momma and Dad decided that his best bet was to get the TECA procedure performed on his right ear. This procedure would remove all of the polyps in his ear, but at the cost of his entire ear canal and would leave his ear sewn shut.

He had this procedure done on December 29th, ending his terrible ordeal. He was such a patient and wonderful boy throughout the whole process and everywhere he went the Doctors loved him! Constantly saying how sweet and obedient he was to work with.

He's a good boy and a big part of the Sanford family. Life wouldn't be nearly as whole without him around, and he's loved very, very much. Getting professional pictures of this wonderful boy from Mallory was one of the best things that I've done, and I will cherish the pictures forever, just like I will always love my little man."

I took Optimus' pictures in September, and I had no idea he was suffering with his ear troubles! He was so energetic, playful, and a blast to photograph.  Amanda requested we take some photos in his Super-Pup outfit, and I happily obliged! I mean, look at that stinkin' adorable pup in his cape! I hope you enjoy these photos!
